Spring 2004 (updated 1-20-04)

Topics      Contact     Grading      Readings

AST 475 is offered for both on-campus students and as a distance education course.  Course notes, reference material, homework and quizzes are accessible through the web for all students. Distance students can access classroom sessions through delayed videostream, and on-campus students can take advantage of this as well. All students are required to attend a role-playing simulation on February 2 and the field trip April 19 (both Monday afternoons), and should contact the instructor immediately if conflicts with these dates arise.  The class will meet on Mondays from 4:10 to 5 pm for lectures, and on Fridays from 3:10 to 5 pm for additional lecture material and problem solving sessions. Classes will normally be held in Room 13 Curtiss Hall. Exceptions will be on February 2, when we will meet in Room 130 Davidson Hall at 2:10 pm, and April 19th, when we will leave for the field trip at 1:10 pm from the Davidson Hall courtyard. Both these special activities will run until 5 pm. We will also be meeting 1 hour early on April 26 (starting at 3:10) for Team Presentations.

This course uses WebCT for homework and grade management.  The main WebCT entrance (which links to supporting documentation about WebCT) is at: https://webct.ait.iastate.edu/ISUtools/webhtml/login.html

Classroom sessions will integrate active-learning activities, which will depend heavily on student involvement. To encourage advance preparation for these activities and to keep everyone on track, quizzes on the course notes and readings are due at 2 pm on the dates indicated.  WebCT software will not permit late submittals, so please complete these on time.  The quiz that covers each topic is indicated next to the topic (Q1=quiz 1, etc.). Homeworks are due at 4:10 pm on the dates indicated. Homework and exam problems and some solutions from previous years are posted on the web for study and review.

Homework will include problems that require careful calculations and good written communication, and will be graded on both attributes.  While students are encouraged to discuss homework problems with classmates, the solution you turn in must be entirely your own work.  Quizzes (via WebCT) include multiple choice, matching, and true-false questions, and are open book.  The quizzes select randomly from a pool of questions. You can take each quiz twice and your highest score will be counted.  Exams are also open book.  To get full credit for class participation you will need to attend the role playing simulation, the field trip, and fill out the WebCT evaluation surveys by the dates indicated.  The team project will include both a group score and an individual score, and will be partially based on peer evaluation.
Readings

This course makes extensive use of online resources and course materials, referenced through the individual topics in the syllabus above.  In addition, two textbooks are required:

U.S. Soil Conservation Service (now Natural Resources  Conservation Service). 1992. Agric. Waste Mgt. Field Handbook (AWMFH). You can download this free off the internet.

Miner, R.J. 1995. A Review of the Literature on  the Nature and Control of Odors from Pork Production Facilities. National Pork  Producers Council, Des Moines, Iowa.  You can download this free off the internet in a few weeks (it is expected in mid January).   Several copies are available for short-term loan from Leah Greving in 213 Davidson Hall.

Both required and recommended readings are listed in the "Supplemental Reading" page.
