In 1989 Dr Birrell was invited by Hitachi Ltd. to spend six months at their pre-eminent Research Laboratory as a visiting researcher, to conduct research on the development of an nitrate ion selective field effect transistor (ISFET). This work provided the basis for further development of a real-time soil nutrient sensing system, at the University of Illinois. Dr Birrell has extensive research experience in precision agriculture, including: the development of sensors for precision agriculture, geostatistics and spatial data analysis; and the investigation of "cause and effect" relationships between important factors and crop yields. Dr Birrells has authored or co-authored 6 referred articles, a book chapter and numerous other papers and presentations. His work has been presented at numerous international and other meetings. Dr Birrell a member of Member of American Society of Agricultural Engineers (ASAE), past chairman of the ASAE Grain Harvesting Committee (PM-53) and chair-elect of the ASAE Precision Agriculture Committee (PM-54). He also is a member of Alpha Epsilon and Gamma Sigma Delta Honor Societies and received recognition for excellence in teaching at the University of Illinois (1988, 1991) during his graduate studies.
