Extension Ventilation Team Wins Awards

Several individuals from our department were
recognized at the 2004 University Extension Awards
Convocation. The Achievement by an Educational Team
Award is given to recognize a single outstanding ISU
Extension effort by a team in delivery of
educational programming, carried out with much
originality or creativity. This year’s award winning
team was Managing Your Unseen Employees: The
Ventilation System. Individuals participating from
ABE were associate professor Jay Harmon and ag
engineering field specialists Kapil Arora, Greg
Brenneman, Kris Kohl, Dan Meyer, and Shawn Shouse.
Non-ISU participants were Richard Stowell and Mike
Brumm from the University of Nebraska, Lee Johnston
and Larry Jacobson from the University of Minnesota,
and Steve Pohl and Robert Thaler from South Dakota
State University.
Agricultural and Biosystems
Engineering (ABE) Learning Community
The ABE Learning Community faculty and staff
received the ISU Learning Community
Institute’s 2004 Outstanding Innovation
Award. Members of the ABE team include ABE
assistant professor Tom Brumm, ABE associate
professor Steve Mickelson (a multiple-year
recipient of the award), and Dave Fisher and
Tom Bowers, English doctoral candidates. We
are very proud of this fact considering that
Iowa State's learning communities were rated
among the top five in the country in U.S.
News and World Report's recent "Best
Colleges" rankings. The team pioneered a new
approach to first-year instruction by
developing an electronic case-study exercise
that simulates real-world experience.

Teaching, Learning, and Technology:

Thomas J. Brumm, assistant professor, was
one of 61 faculty from higher education
institutions throughout the world who

Several ABE faculty were promoted in the
past year:
Bill Batchelor, from associate professor to
professor
Stuart Birrell, from assistant professor to

proud of Dr. Batchelor and Dr. Birrell for
their scholarly accomplishments.
