Improving Air Quality In and Around Swine Farms in Iowa and Denmark:  International Research Collaboration between ISU and the Danish Institute of Agricultural Sciences

 J. A. Koziel and S. Hoff

Iowa State University. Dean of Agriculture International Research Grant. 2004-2005

Abstract: International collaboration links two research groups at ISU and at the Danish Institute of Agricultural Sciences that have a long-term goal of mitigating livestock odor. Drs. Koziel and Hoff lead the Atmospheric Air Quality Laboratory, the Olfactometry Laboratory, and the Air Dispersion Laboratories.

The main focus of these laboratories is the research of air emissions of odor, gases, and particulates related to swine production in particular. These three laboratories support several USDA-National Research Initiative-funded projects in Air Quality related to livestock operations. Drs. Hisamitsu and Petersen lead world-class air quality research related to swine operations in Denmark. In particular, Dr. Hisamitsu leads a research team studying swine odor via the combination of chemical and olfactometry analysis. Dr. Petersen leads a research group focused on (a) modeling of swine odor and gaseous emissions, (b) manure management, and (3) odor and gaseous emissions abatement. These areas are complementary with the research focus of Drs. Koziel and Hoff at ISU.
