ABE Department

We Were the First!

The Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering Department at Iowa State was the first department in the world to grant a degree in Agricultural Engineering.  That was way back in 1905.  And we haven’t stopped breaking new ground since then.

ABE Faculty
Faculty in agricultural and biosystems engineering department have achieved a high degree of excellence in teaching, research, and educational innovation. Their extraordinary efforts have resulted in many awards, honors, and recognition from receiving the highest distinction within their professional society to honorary degrees from international universities.

The superior ability of the faculty is matched by the close attention they give to students in small class sizes of 15 to 30 students. Each student has a faculty advisor who answers questions about course selection and career opportunities. An excellent average faculty advisor ratio of 20 to 1 helps students in designing a program that matches their interests and professional goals.

The ABE Environment
The Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering is committed to providing students with a productive study environment that features
  • learning communities that help you make the adjustment to college academic life, providing a support system of linked classes and peer mentors that lay the foundation for your success at Iowa State and beyond
  • living communities that facilitate communication by housing agricultural engineering and agricultural systems technology majors on the same dorm floor
  • student lounges and mailboxes for each student to facilitate direct contact with faculty and other students

The department maintains over 30 advanced computers with internet connections and sophisticated software just for student use.

Students have access to state-of-the-art, hands-on labs in many areas:

  • engine assembly and analysis
  • biomaterial management
  • sensors and controls
  • agricultural machinery
  • biosystems crop modeling
